My Paxson Manolos

My hip and stylish mukluks, these made from moose hide. I wear them every day now. Essentially Arctic moccasins, they are very warm and very quiet. I wonder if our famous governor has a pair? She seems a woman who'd be equally comfortable in Manolos or mukluks!

My feet are also shod in ski boots these days and I’m quickly getting my ski-legs back. Audie has been busy, almost every day, grooming our extensive network of trails in the forest, to get them ready for our local dogmushers to use, for us on skis and with the dogs, and for the snowmachiners, mushers, and skiers we have stay with us. 20 miles of trails! It’s really a fantastic work-out. Nordic skiing is one of the best exercises that exists, and I’m really happy to be back on the skis again. We’re quite blessed with our location here, as we have boreal forest trails and tundra trails: peaceful, enclosed woods, or the beautiful, wide expanse of the open tundra.

People always ask what our travel plans are for the winter. I believe in taking a trip at least once a year, and winter is the only time we can do it, pretty typical for most people in Alaska. One possibility is we are invited to a wedding in Bogota, Colombia…the wedding of my dear Colombian girlfriend, Ximena, who will soon be moving to the US, which I’m quite happy about. Visiting family in The Netherlands could also be on the agenda….but alas, my travel fund just evaporated in the stock market, so international trips may have to go on hold for a few months!

One trip I definitely will be doing is down to Arizona to drive my Subaru Outback, Lucy, up to Alaska. I had kept Lucy in AZ for the couple of months I would spend down there in the winter, when I’d do some teaching. I won’t be doing that anymore (I’m getting more used to the cold….hey, it’s 0 degrees now, quite balmy!), so I want my favorite car here. That means: road trip! Lots of friends and family to visit along the way. I may put her on the ferry, when we leave Seattle, so I can finally see the Inside Passage.

Hee hee - so you find 0 degrees balmy! No wonder you're not leaving in the winter anymore... That road trip sounds like a lot of fun, and it would be great to see the Inside Passage also! I had no idea you have that many trails to keep up! No wonder you stay so busy thru the winter with all this stuff going on!

Not as busy as the summer...but we do have a lot going on this winter. A lot of new things. And Audie got a new snowmachine for this winter, so he's really having a blast putting all those trails in. We'll be hooking up the dogs with the skis soon!
